Remember when you could go to the junkyard and buy a good 350 small block Chevy core for a few hundred bucks and a Ford 9-inch rear for even less? Well, times have sure changed. You aren't likely to find that 9-inch at the local boneyard now and if you want to run an IRS like I did, you'll be paying through the nose for it.
The 8.8-inch Ford IRS we grabbed out of an '03 Ford Expedition SUV was a whopping 800 bucks. We only needed the brakes, center section, and CV joints too because the thing was about 10-inches too wide to fit between the bedsides of the C10. But, the 8.8 would be plenty strong, and we could have new axles made using the CVs that would be even stronger. But the main advantage to using this IRS instead of a Corvette unit (popular with street rodders) is that without u-joints to bind up, we could get plenty of suspension travel. And unlike an RX-7 rearend (popular with mini-truckers), this one wouldn't break when we found a way to hook up all of that horsepower. Sure, the Jag IRS is good, but have you priced one lately?
